Mix time

So I made myself a mix of new stuff I’ve been listening to – a good bit of which is European (which I found out about as a result of, e.g., the awesome record store in Amsterdam, posters in Paris, etc.), and including some really different songs/genres that I typically don’t listen to much of. Of course there’s still some good old typical indie rock, too. If anyone’s interested I can send the mix along. Here’s the track listing.

l’europe en chanson au printemps :

1 Alex Gopher – Brain Leech

2 The Wombats – Moving to New York

3 The Arcade Fire – The Well and the Lighthouse

4 Klaxons – Golden Skans

5 Maps – Don’t Fear

6 Stars – The First Five Times (Russian Futurists remix)

7 Jamie T – Sheila

8 Yelle – Je Veux Te Voir

9 Shitdisco – 72 Virgins

10 Kavinsky – Testarossa Autodrive

11 !!! – Bend Over Beethoven

12 Mika – Relax, Take It Easy

13 Bob Sinclar feat. Steve Edwards – World Hold On

14 Love of Diagrams – Pace or the Patience

15 Brendan Benson – Feel Like Taking You Home

16 Voxtrot – Kid Gloves

17 The Broken West – So It Goes

18 Peter Bjorn and John – Paris 2004

19 Cajun Dance Party – Colourful Life

20 The Rifles – Peace and Quiet (unplugged)

21 Pelle Carlberg – How I Broke My Foot and Met Jesus

22 Findlay Brown – But You Love Me

23 Monta – Summer Hits Back

24 Benoît Pioulard – Fir

25 Camille – Assise

26 Adele – My Same

27 Feist – My Moon My Man

28 Odile Closset and Manu Markou – La Nostalgie Camarade

29 4hero feat. Carina Anderson – Morning Child

just a note: track 13 is included only because it’s impossible not to, as I pretty much hear it at least once in EVERY bar or club in Paris. It’s pretty terrible but oddly catchy.

13 is such a guilty pleasure song and I'm sure all of France will be upset with you for forgetting the second part of the song title (Children Of The Sky). I'm not even going to pretend I haven't been listening to it way too much since yesterday...maybe if I'm luck I'll hear it at some club in nyc at 4am.

This is true. And I won't pretend I didn't rock out a little listening to it on the metro yesterday. Detailed comments better come later!

also- upon revision, track 10's out. Blah.

As requested:

01 - Alex Gopher - "Brain Leech" - I like it... Light, fun, with a little
more rock than I expected at the choruses which is a nice surprise and it de
is catchy

02 - The Wombats - "Moving To New York" - Kind of like the first song in
terms of it's a good song with catchy choruses and a nice light feel, not
mind-blowing but I like it.

03 - Arcade Fire - "The Well And The Lighthouse" - One of the better songs
off of Neon Bible (I still owe it a couple of additional listens before I
come up with an opinion on the whole thing) and probably the first great
track on the mix in my opinion. I wonder if I like this because it's more
similar to Funeral's sound than some of the others.

04 - Klaxons - "Golden Skans" - I owe The Klaxons a few more listens but so
far my opinion of the album is very hit & miss. It's either great songs
like this or completely forgettable. Anyone else agree? It could be I need
to listen more... commuting listening is not always the best in terms of
quality and attention given to the work.

05 - Maps - "Don't Fear The Sun" - A little mellow but I can feel myself
thawing out from the winter while listening to it (or is it just the awesome
nyc weather today?) so I’m liking it

06 - Stars - "The First Five Time (Russian Futurist Remix)" - Let me start
by saying I'm looking forward to Do You Trust Your Friends since last year
(it's been delayed forever but it's coming out this spring.. woo!!!!!)...
And I really hope the majority of the album's better than this track... Not
that I hate it, but I loved the original so much that it would have been
difficult to reinvent it and have me loving it. I'm a big fan of remixes
but I think they should bring something to the song, reinvent it in a way
that makes you take another look at the track... I'm not sure this one does
it but it's not bad by any means

07 - Jamie T - "Sheila" - It gets points for being unique (not the typical
stateside tune) and the melody is pretty cool but overall it's not amazing.

08 - Yelle - "Je Veux Te Voir" - This song starts and every time I lose my
mind... It's great... The beat, the French femme's rappin', I love it.... But
by the end it loses some of it's magic... However I can imagine being out in
a club/bar in Paris, maybe a little inebriated, and losing my mind whenever
it comes on. I would like to hear a little more Yelle and see what I think
after a little more exposure.

09 - Shitdisco - "72 Virgins - Not the most original track ever (I'm not
even trying to say all of my mix songs are... Not even close) but it's
okay. If I were trying to fit this mix on one disc I would probably cut
this.

10 - Kavinsky - "Testarossa Autodrive" - I can imagine playing a video game
with this as the background music... Which is not a bad thing. I can see
myself grooving to this while enjoying a night out but this might be another
casualty of the 80 min constraint... Depends on the rest of the tracks.

11 - !!! - "Bend Over Beethoven" - Not the best !!! song ever but it's not a
bad transition into the next track.

12 - Mika - "Relax, Take It Easy" - Light years better than "Grace Kelly" in
my opinion which was the only Mika track I knew. I might actually pick up
his cd after hearing this.

13 - Bob Sinclar & Steve Edwards - "World Hold On (Children Of The Sky)" -
Originally I was thinking I would have to come up with some sort of
explanation for liking this track & and listening to it as much as I have
been but screw that.. it's cheesy, it's fun, and it's very Euro and I would
love to be out and have this come on. It's not exactly deep but you know
what, who cares! The whistling isn't quite as catchy as Peter Bjorn &
John's but it's still great. I wonder if whistling is the new cowbell?

14 - Love Of Diagrams - "Pace Or The Patience" - A bit of a departure from
the Mika track into the rock world. It reminds me of someone... Maybe The
Gossip?

15 - Brendan Benson - Feel Like Taking You Home - Is this Cold Hands Warm
Heart Brendan Benson?!? Wow... Pretty different but I really like it... One
of my faves so far.

16 - Voxtrot - Kid Gloves - Nicely done... One of my favorite tracks from
the full length. They definitely seem to be growing beyond the EP's which
isn't necessarily a bad thing but I hope they don't stray too far. Great
song (that's two in a row!!!)

17 - The Broken West - So It Goes - Ahhhhh... A little poppy goodness! I
like it... This is a good section I've stumbled upon!

18 - Peter Bjorn & John - Paris 2004 - One of my favorite songs from the
album, one of my favorite songs live when I saw them, and one of my favorite
tracks on the mix.

19 - Cajun Dance Party - Colourful Life - A very Euro sound complete with a
Euro spelling in the title. It's good but it doesn't rank up there with the
last 4 for me.

20 - The Rifles - "Peace & Quiet (Unplugged)" - First off I have to give props to you
for 100% biting my style! LOL It's a nice change from the album version. It's
a good song and it transitions to a stripped down version well.

21 - Pelle Carlberg - "How I Broke My Foot And Met Jesus" - Pretty cool, and I'm definitely interested in hearing more from Pelle but I hope there's a little more pep to some of the songs because otherwise it would be a cd to nap to.

22 - Findlay Brown - "But You Love Me" - Apparently I've stumbled upon a mellow cluster...lol... But I like it! The harmonies remind me of Simon & Garfunkel (definitely not a bad thing!) and they have a nice sound

23 - Monta - "Summer Hits Back" - Zzzzzzzzz.... Definitely the mellow block but I'm digging it. I could completely imagine using this to score a scene in a film.

24 - Benoît Pioulard - "Fir" - So what does fir mean? I'm curious if it has any relation to the mood/tone of the track. It's completely different yet strangely similar to the Monta track... I wonder if that's just the magic of sequencing. This might be another casualty of the 1 cd restrictions.

25 - Camille - "Assise" - A very "world music" sound and had it not been as short as it was I may have tired of it but it was a change of pace and a good lead into the next track.

26 - Adele - "My Same" - I'm not sure why exactly but it makes me think of Nina Simone... I know the tone of her voice is 100% different and she's not on the same artistic level but it reminds me of her.

27 - Feist - "My Moon My Man" - I loooooooooooooooooove this song! It's easily my favorite track on Feist's new album, The Reminder. I need to listen to it a few more times before I come up with a educated opinion but right now I'm wishing there were more tracks like this on it.

28 - Odile Closset & Manu Markou - "La nostalgie Camarade" - I love the album cover of this track… not that it has anything to do with the song but that's the first thing I noticed when it came up. As for the song.. I don't know.. It's not bad but I'm trying to figure out what mood or atmosphere I would enjoy it in and I'm coming up short (definitely not being helped by the language barrier) but it's not bad.

29 - 4hero - "Morning Child feat. Carina Anderson" - Now this song I liked right from the start. It light, it's fun, and Carina has a great voice (that sounds very familiar.... Hmmmmm... This requires additional research)

Well that's that and with one final listen of "World Hold On (Children Of The Sky)" I bid you adieu!

do I get to comment on the comments?

Agree about the klaxons. I don't think you need to bother giving it any more listens... / Stars- Isn't the loving-the-original thing going to be a problem the whole album through? lol it sure will be for me!, i mean it's just so good as it is I can't imagine preferring any of the new ones once we get to hear them all. But i still really like this remix when it's played loud and do think it brings a very different feel/mood to the song, much darker and slower as compared to the light, fun feel of the original. / Yelle- Well you know what you need to do, then. (Live it up in Paris!!) But preferably sometime AFTER june 13th or so, k? Lol. / Kavinsky- definitely cut, in retrospect. / Omg - Whistling might even be the new handclap. The club crowd whistling along is what got us laughing and loving the song in the first place. The sketchy people seriously take the time to stop making out and whistle. It's great. / 15 - i know, right?! / vox- Now that ive heard the rest, i don't know that i'd have chosen this one! ha. / rifles - so chose it before i listened to your mix / benoit - never! this is one of my favorites! Though ive no idea what it means either. / feist - was my first favorite too but has since been replaced!

and thuth concludth my rethpontheth. You have to thpeak like thith here you know. Otherwithe they'll know you're a tourith for THURE! :)
